Austrian psychiatrist Sigmund Freud has made a substantial contribution to the world of psychology. In fact, he is known as the father of psychoanalysis. Born on May 6, 1856 as Sigismund Schlomo Freud, he is best known for his theories of the unconscious mind.
His theories are centered on human sexual desire as the primary motivation of life. In his theories of psychosexual development, he expounded on the Oedipus complex. Named after the famous Greek tragedy Oedipus Rex by Sophocles, it expounds on the incestuous desire one has of the mother figure early in life. In his essays, he says I found myself in constant love for my mother and jealousy of my father. I now consider this to be a universal event in childhood.??? He posited that as humans developed, they go through particular fixation stages. They are as follows:
Oral Stage Pleasure derived during infant???s nursing stage
Anal stage Toddlers enjoy excretion of bowels during toilet training stage
Phallic stage This is when Oedipus complex is most active. The child is fixated on a parent as a sexual object.
Latency State this is the dormant stage of psychosexual development when most urges are repressed
Genital Stage Sexual maturity is reached during this stage.
In his later works, Freud was more concerned with the divisions of the psyche. He divides it into three parts: the Id, the Ego and the Superego. Discussing this in the 1920 model entitled Beyond the Pleasure Principle, he elaborates on the id as the impulsive, child-like portion of the psyche that is strongly influenced by the pleasure principles. The superego, on the other hand, is the other extreme, taking morality as the most important aspect of decision-making. The ego attempts to balance both the id and the superego. Most people are said to manifest only the ego.
Freud???s work heavily influenced those of dream analysis experts. His book The Interpretation of Dream??? (Die Traumdeutung???) was first published in 1899. Here, he explains that dreams are often related to wish-fulfillment.
He explains that dream analysis should be related to events that happen to the dreamer in real life. Particularly to events that happen the previous day. Most of his dream interpretations reflect fears, desires and emotions that are in our unconscious mind. Even negative dreams can be interpreted as events that the dreamer wishes would not occur.
Freud further explores the symbolism as part of dream interpretation. He believes that the messages are disguised and indirect in their meaning. For adults, especially, the meaning of dreams are more difficult to decode.
In addition to symbolism, other operations that distort the actual meaning of dreams also exist. Condensation, where one dream object stands for several associations, is a form of distorting operation. Dream analysis experts also need to take displacement into consideration, this is when the dream???s emotional significance is separated from its real object so it does not raise suspicion. Finally, representation helps the unconscious translate thoughts into visual images.
